I'm not just here to listen.
I'm here to help you be made whole.
I’m Elaine Bender, LPC, and I founded Whole Life Counseling for the person who is done simply talking about their problems and ready to make lasting change. Most of my clients are already self-aware but deeply frustrated—they know exactly what they’re doing that isn't working, but they lack the practical tools to stop the cycle. I am an active, direct partner in your recovery, helping you bridge the gap between knowing what to do and actually being able to do it.

I utilize my experience in evidence-based, practical protocols to help teens and young adults overcome personal and relational obstacles, take emotional risks, set boundaries, and build healthy and meaningful lives.

How I got my start

I didn't start out as a believer in therapy. When I lost my single mother at 19, I repeatedly declined help. Despite failing two classes at the time (because I really just couldn't motivate myself to care after such a loss), I told myself therapy was for people with "real problems" and that I wasn't struggling "bad enough" to justify a seat on the couch.

Eventually, a few persistent college friends convinced me to give therapy a chance. To my surprise, I didn't just find support—I found relief, clarity, and a new hope. Years later, while working in a supervisory role with college students, I realized I was naturally providing the same structured support I once needed myself. That’s when I knew this was my calling.
Expertise Built in High-Intensity Spaces
Around the beginning of my psychotherapy career, I gained my most significant clinical experience working on the front lines with survivors of domestic violence. Navigating those high-stakes environments taught me that insight is useless without safety and stabilization. While in this role, I gained training and experience in behavioral change protocols like DBT, CBT, and ACT, as well as treatments for addressing and processing trauma. I dived deeper into Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) because I saw the immediate, life-changing impact it had on my clients. It moved the needle in a way that "chit chat therapy" (as I like to call it) never could.

Today, I bring that same focus on stabilization and skill-acquisition to my work with teens and young adults. I specialize in providing the high-level tools needed for complex trauma and intense emotional cycles, ensuring that our work together leads to measurable growth you can see in your daily life.
Life Beyond the Chair
I believe a "life worth living" is one that is balanced, intentional, and full of healthy relationships. When I’m not in the office, you’ll likely find me outdoors. I’m always working on turning my backyard into a "magical European garden" and like to spend my weekends cycling or mountain biking with friends. (I'm up for a "walk-and-talk" session in the office neighborhood ANYTIME! Just say the word.) Most importantly, I’m at home with my two dogs and partner, and spending quality time with the people I love.
